"R" is for Really Good Story About This Last Trip

I am done.

Yes folks, I am finished with Myrtle Beach.  The cottage is empty and clean now but it wasn't when we got there.  It had been taken over by swarms of mosquitoes while we were away.  I kid you not!  We arrived at 11:00 p.m. after an 8 hour trip to open up the place and find hundreds of mosquitoes.  They must have come in through the dryer vent opening. They swarmed us...swooping and dive bombing.  I ran for cover.

This was me....

Our vacuum was still there so Bruce sucked those little bastards buggers up as they flocked to the lights.  I bet you never thought your Hoover upright doubled as a weapon did you?!!  Bruce went on the attack with the wand and won! My hero.

New Superhero....Vacuum Man!

We plugged up the vent and finally it was all clear to blow up our enormous air bed and climb in for some well needed sleep.  After Bruce blew it up, I put sheets on it and he decided to run down to the 24 hour convenience store to get some beverages since we had nothing left in the car.  He left and I climbed on that bed and the next thing I knew he was walking through the door saying "OMG, what happened?"

Startled, I opened my eyes to discover that I was laying flat on the floor.  Yes, with our luck, there appeared to be a leak along the seam!!  So while I feel instantly asleep, this mattress was instantly letting all the air out.  I kid you not!

This is exactly what it looked like except with me in it!

Now, getting up off of a hard floor for me is a challange since I can't kneel very well.  If there was a video of Bruce trying to help me up, I would have to enter it to America's Funniest Videos.  I started laughing and Bruce  was asking me "how can you laugh at a time like this?"  Well, that's easy.  It was either laugh or cry and I wasn't about to start crying.  My eyes don't look so pretty in the morning after a crying jag.

So, from there....we went down the road to a local Comfort Inn.  Remember, the reason we were staying on the air mattress was because we couldn't afford a hotel in the first place.  Sooo, I sent Bruce in and he got the guy at the desk to use every possible discount and coupon code available to man and we only paid $59 a night.  Now that man at the desk will certainly be going to heaven!

A hot shower, clean sheets and a real bed.  We crashed hard and slept great.  Got up and went on our way to the cottage to get the task at hand done.  I had convinced Bruce that after a hard day of cleaning, trash runs, storage facility runs etc. we were not going to be up for an immediate 8 hour drive back so we had booked the room for a second night and thank god we did.  We were so exhausted, hot, sweaty and dirty by 3:30 in the afternoon.  Not to mention stiff and so sore.  After showering, I laid down and the next thing I knew it was 11:30 p.m and I didn't even get up to eat or take my meds.  Slept till 5:30 the next morning and we headed back.

So here I am.  Back in my new home.  I slept like a baby in my own bed last night and intend to take it easy today.

The Myrtle Beach chapter is behind me and now I really am so glad to be home.

New adventures await you all (and me)...

  1. LOL...I know I should not laugh at this but it was funny....glad it was not happening to me. I would hate living in a place like that. I loved my visit there but do not think I would like it there all the time.

  2. My air bed does that. Jessie can go to sleep on it and wake up with it empty. I'm glad you were able to get such a discount, I would have liked to have seen how he did that one. Enjoy your new home :)

  5. This was a really great story Barb, it's amazing how when you entered the house it was nothing to do with you really but then it eventually became part of your life. Best of luck in the future away from Myrtle Beach Barb, as cool a place as Myrtle Beach.

  6. What an adventure! I'm sorry, but I had to chuckle also. It sounds like something that would happen to me! We had a very similar experience in our RV last month. My wife's mom and sister met us a place we were camped at. They were going to sleep on an air mattress also. I had to get up in the middle of the night and use half a roll of duct tape to fix it. Duct tape....man's greatest invention!

  9. Hi Barb, I love you great sense of humor and wonderful happy outlook on life! You sure did make me smile. By the way, I can't stand even one mozzie buzzing around so I can't even imagine walking into a room full of them. Giving you a cyber high-five :) A job well done, Dudette!

  11. I'm happy for you Barb. I don't care how exhausted or irritated you are but to me when I blow up a portable air mattress it spells adventure. Hope everything works out for you. If i'm ever in the area I will look you up for a sunset beer!

  12. Man, Barb...I feel bad that all that happened but you told the story hilariously as usual. I was laughing out loud from the moment you described Bruce with the vacuum. Well, glad you're settled back in to your new home now.

I sent you an email this morn. Let me know if you didn't get it and I'll resend. I get a lot of them back from the 'mail demon' because my internet connection is still giving me major grief.

  15. What a great way to tell a story. How in the world did y'all manage to get all the mosquitoes sucked up? I may hold on to my old vacuum for just that reason! Settle in and rest and can't wait to hear the next chapter!
    Hugs~

  16. Well it is good that you managed to get a cheap room but it could have been worse you could have not notice the leak till the morning and spent a night sleeping on the hard floor and that would mean ending up with a bad back for the rest of the day........good thing you had the vacuum to suck up those nasty mossies........
